Color Guard & Drum Major Instructor
Neil Cheatum is currently in his 7th year as Color Guard and Drum Major instructor for Vancleave High School. Coach Cheatum is originally from Wiggins, MS and graduated from Stone High school in 2013.
During his high school years, he was a member of the marching and symphonic band, show choir, Key club, and a class officer. He was also a member of the 2012 and 2013 MHSAA State Honor Band and the 2013 GCBDA Honor Band. In 2013 Coach Cheatum was awarded the John Phillip Sousa award for his outstanding musicianship and leadership skills with the Stone High School Band.
Upon graduation, Coach Cheatum attended MGCCC where he began his studies in elementary education while being a member of the Band of Gold (BOG). During his second year he served as co Drum major and in his third year he served as the head Drum Major for the B.O.G. In 2016 he was the recipient of the Directors Award. Coach Cheatum graduated with honors from MGCC with an Associate of Arts degree and was awarded membership to the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society.
Since starting as an instructor at VHS, Coach Cheatum has worked with the Drum Majors, been the Color Guard Instructor for three years, and started VHS’s Winter Guard program. During the 2021 – 2022 school year, Coach Cheatum will also serve as a permanent COVID Substitute Teacher for Vancleave Middle School.
His hobbies include hanging out with his friends, traveling, chorography, and baking, and his plans for the future include enrolling back into college online at the University Louisiana Monroe to finish his Elementary Education teaching degree.
